Zimbabwean trailblazing filmmaker, producer and tech founder, Zoe Ramushu, will once again be shining at Cannes, as she recently bagged a nomination at the Global Production Awards. The South Africa based Ramushu is in the running for the Impact Leadership Award for her revolutionary app, Wrapped.
The application enables companies and individuals in the film and television industry to hire and be hired efficiently by automating the hiring, training, onboarding and payment processes.
Describing how it feels to nominated again, the filmmaker said, "It is the second time but if I'm honest it still does feel a little bit unreal, to know that you're being recognised on a global stage among such incredible people. But at the same it does feel real and validating, knowing that a little black girl belongs in these spaces. These are things we say to ourselves as affirmations."
Held at the Cannes Film Festival, the Global Production Awards celebrate the very best production work taking place in the world, outstanding and emerging locations, along with great work in areas that include diversity and sustainable production.
Ramushu revealed that it was further affirming that her application had recently received funding from the MultiChoice Innovation Fund, a collaboration she described as heartwarming.
"I'm actually really grateful that my funding has come from home, because a lot of the time you get this recognition on these big stages; I was at the Berlinale EFM Startups 2024 and the Microsoft Café last year at Cannes, as well as the awards, but it feels completely different and heartwarming to be received with open arms at home." - Zoe Ramushu
Ramushu's journey in impact work has been a long and meaningful one. From confounding the women in film organization SWIFT in South Africa, to leading student protests at Columbia Journalism school, to creating the Chiriseri Test (a diversity guide for newsrooms) whilst a Reuters Institute fellow at Oxford, this has led her to the creation an Wrapped.
The filmmaker has been nominated for the Student Oscars and BAFTAs, in addition to her production company creating several award winning films - the latest being a Netflix feature film titled Real Estate Sisters.
