While Afro house in Zimbabwe can still be described as a niche genre, it is certainly not one lacking in talent. As the seeds of the sound spread across the country, new names are ever rising to the fore, with synth and percussion driven dreams.
One such name is Josh Major, a Bulawayo based producer fuelled by self belief and inspired by the likes of Uhuru, DJ Kent, Nitefreak, and Black Coffee.
Raised on a sonic diet of SA house grooves, from the Kwaito era to the emergence of gqom and amapiano, the producer has long had a deep love for music. This culminated in him entering the music space as an artist, with tutelage from the globally renowned Zimbabwean DJ/producer Nitefreak.
"My love for music has always been a driving force. In 2019, I was introduced to Afro tech by Nitefreak (Bheki), who not only sparked my passion for the genre but also mentored me in crafting its unique sound. Since then, I've been hooked, and with his guidance, I've been learning the intricacies of producing Afro house and Afro tech." - Josh Major
The producer's sound is characterized by infectious grooves, soulful melodies, and a blend of energetic and emotive vibes. His aim is to create music that not only gets people moving but also tells a story and evokes emotions.
Although still only just beginning, the producer has already raked up the releases with a consistent work ethic.
"In the next 5 years, I hope to establish myself as a prominent Afro house artist, known for my unique sound and style. I'd like to release consistent, high-quality music that resonates with my audience and takes my brand to new heights." - Josh Major
"Makhokhoba to Mbare" is the latest chapter in Josh Major's musical journey, a single that takes inspiration from Zimbabwe's townships. It arrives on the back of "Mweya," a collaboration with DJ Stavo & Bryan K that was the producer's first release of the year.
Heavily influenced by the sounds of jazz and laden with percussion, "Makhokhoba to Mbare" captures the feeling and rhythm of life in Zimbabwe's often mischaracterised neighbourhoods.
"The inspiration behind 'Makhokhoba to Mbare' is to shine a light on the untold beauty of our often-misunderstood townships," shared the producer.
"Having experienced life in Bulawayo and Harare, I wanted to share the vibrant culture, resilience of the youth, and the warmth of the elders that thrive in these communities. It's a story of hope, pride, and the unsung heroes of our ghetto neighborhoods."
The song has already found it's way onto local DJ sets and airwaves. A testament to the rising producer's talent and work ethic.
In addition to enriching his catalogue, Josh Major is also focused on honing his craft as a DJ, and he has his sights set on headling not only local but international festivals.
As another ember of Zimbabwe's Afro house movement, the possibilities of his career are limitless.
