Beginning Thursday, March 20, Reps Theatre will be showcasing the David West Read's play '& Juliet.' Directed by Sue Bolt, with musical direction from Sharon Thompson, the production is the story of what would have happened if Juliet didn’t kill herself when she thought Romeo was dead... This is her journey as a strong, independent woman, who learns to love herself, along with her achievements and failures. It is about womens empowerment and how we dig deep into ourselves to find the strength to carry on.
"Why did I choose to direct & Juliet? I loved the idea of a twist on a Shakespeare play, with the addition of a wide range of music." - Sue Bolt, Director of '& Juliet'
The script is clever, witty and in turn funny and bittersweet, with music from a number of different artists and genres carrying the narrative.
"& Juliet is an exhilarating and upbeat spectacle that will have you singing and dancing along to songs you already know and love. There are quiet moments where characters explore what it means to be in love, and there may or may not be a love triangle! I play Juliet in the show, and it has been a dream. I love musicals, so getting to play a character who sings in almost every scene has been both challenging and extremely fulfilling." - Ashley Makuwa who plays Juliet
The cast is young, vibrant and hugely energetic – they have to be as almost all roles require the actors to be able to sing, dance and act! The play stars Act Muronzi, Caroline Yule, Elvis Chikiwa, Ashley Makuwa, Paintafresco and Anesu Lioga.
The play will feature music from Brittany Spears, Pink, Backstreet Boys, Bon Jovi, Katy Perry and many more musical icons of the 2000s. Songs like "Oops I Did It Again," "Everybody," "Perfect," "It’s My Life," "Hit Me Baby One More Time" and more.
"It has been an absolute pleasure to work with the cast, and the tech crew has been wonderful. Without the set, stage props and lighting and sound teams the production would be incomplete – the techs are an integral part of the production." - Sue Bolt, Director of '& Juliet'
