In a step that embraces the Zimbabwe Film Strategy, which was launched in the last quarter of 2024, the National Arts Council of Zimbabwe (NACZ) has launched a short film grant. Aimed at empowering filmmakers and encouraging innovative storytelling, the grant will see successful submissions receiving up to $2,000.
"It is encouraging that the government has spear headed the process to revitalise the film industry by committing through the national budget. The NACZ is also glad that thr unveiling of this grant has happened because this is what the sector has been asking for. We are there to provide an enabling environment for out creatives," said NACZ Director, Napoleon Nyanhi.
Applicants for the grant must proven capacity in short film production and recognized references in the mould of ZBC, 3KTV, NRTV, ZTN or others of similar ilk. They should also be a member of a film organisation/association registered with NACZ. The short films must resonate with the Zimbabwean experience and proposed production must be a new short film with a maximum duration of 20 minutes.
Female filmmakers are being especially encouraged to apply and the grant funding is open to all filmmakers who are permanent residents of Zimbabwe.
A panel of five seasoned industry experts (seasoned filmmakers) will conduct the adjudication process guided by a methodology formed from the conditions of entry. The three winning short films are going to become part of a national film repository and will be showcased at both local and international film festivals.
Interested applicants must submit proposals by 14 April 2025, these should include a cover letter, their profiles or CV, filmography, pitch deck or equivalent (outlining the plot and synopsis) and justification for why the grant should be awarded to them.
In a statement, the NACZ board chairperson, Dr J.N Maraire, reiterated the organisation's commitment to capacitating the film sector, and expressed gratitude to the Lotteries and Gaming Board, who have injected modest financial funding for program.
