Hip-hop is a genre that is forever crying out for something new. A new interpretation of genre, a new artist, a new word for the culture's every growing lexicon and so many other news. With "Bhimu," Sane succeeds in satisfying that hunger for something novel. An artist couldn't ask for a better way to announce themselves on the scene.
Although teased for almost 6 months, sane.wav's latest release makes good on the hype of the snippets that have been floating on social media. As whispers of "Freshman of the year" and "Best newcomer" floating into conversation surrounding the single, it confirms that he was right to take his time.
"Bhimu" has a languid instrumental that's met with a confident cadence, easily quotable lyrics and social commentary backed by comic relief. Whether it's "Seiko urikuwanza mabouncer? Ghetto yut haritongwe negym," "Pasa pasa kudii kwacho, skeez hadzitengwe neBhimu" or "Bhebhi rangu, bhebhi rei usina mota? Unozongo suffer mudhiri."
Aside from giving us new captions for social media, Sane also presents us with new lingo (Maniggaland was an instant addiction to my slang dictionary). He effortlessly makes things like escapism sound like the coolest thing on earth: "Straight kuManiggaland, tsika jezzman takabooker flight." Yet there's more than just that to "Bhimu." The track touches on the culture of gatekeeping, the struggles of Zimbabwean life, making it out of poverty and forgetting those you left behind.
The track is defined by a youthful exuberance and while reflective of the daily lives of Zimbabwe youth, what it has going the most is simply how entertaining it is. The visuals for the song equally capture the feeling of the music. From the concept, to the colour grading, to the fashion, and Sane's own aesthetic, "Bhimu" is destined to captivate the hip-hop audience (and beyond).
