When Bagga, Kayflow and Nasper first collaborated together on "Horror," there was an undeniable spark of chemistry. Over a mid-tempo instrumental brilliantly weaved together by Nasper, Bagga and Kayflow played off each other to great result. If that had seemed like a fluke then their most recent work together - alongside Nisha Ts, with Angeo Pablo assisting on production - proves their brilliance to be more than chance.
"Penge Lenge" has the feel of a celebratory anthem - a work of it's production among other things - yet at it's heart it's a song very much inspired by the difficulties of life. It revels in escapism, with some sort of vice being seen as a necessity to often the tensions brought about by our daily existence. While dominated by a dancehall-esque bass line, the song carries the Afrojecha sound, which was inaugurated into being by Kayflow and Nasper on the Nyamadrive EP.
Over the infectious and dynamic beat, melody and clever lyricism paint a picture of indulging in an intoxicant being as good as cathartic release: From Bagga on the bridge saying; "Chero kuchitonhora ndoda rino tonhorera," to Kayflow reflecting; "Kumhunga hakuna ipwa ingori hondo yemasoja/Pajecha pachipisa sekumberi kwebonza," and then Nisha Ts stating; "Penge lenge, kubva last year, kubata this year, sober ichinetsa." The three artists, who are undoubtedly the now and the future of Zimbabwean music, each deliver a worthy performance, which cements this collaboration as one of the tracks that will standout this year.
"Penge Lenge" has eye-catching visuals directed by Leoy V; a visual masterpiece with bright palette that captures the undiluted feeling of the single. From the artists themselves, to the extras, the video makes a bold fashion statement. This is credited to Scott Streetwear who handled the styling. There is a carefree atmosphere in the video, that's added to by the comic relief of a dog in shades and a bandana, and a goat decked out in colourful fabric. It's the kind of stuff you keep watching over and over again.
