Thabani Gapara a renowned Zimbabwe-born, New Zealand-based saxophonist has launched a tour for his highly anticipated fourth album titled Dzindza, a vibrant and soulful tribute to his African heritage released on October 18, 2024.
The album title, Dzindza, meaning “Ancestry” in
Shona, reflects Gapara's deep connection to his cultural roots, blending
traditional African sounds with the bold energy of contemporary jazz.
With a musical journey spanning 16 years, taking him across
continents and musical landscapes. A graduate of the New Zealand School of
Music, Gapara's collaborations with an array of artists in Zimbabwe, South
Africa, and New Zealand have enriched his creative repertoire. His previous
albums include The Griots Path, In Their Footsteps Volume 1
and 2.
The tour began with a high-energy performance at the
Wellington Jazz Festival 2024 and continues at Hamilton’s The Meteor Theatre on
November 23. Further shows are planned at Totara Street in Mount Maunganui and
Auckland’s Tuning Fork. Known for his expressive and flamboyant live
performances, Gapara’s concerts promise an unforgettable night of rhythm,
storytelling, and rich musical textures.
Gapara’s impact on the New Zealand music scene has been
profound. Originally unfamiliar with the local music landscape when he arrived,
Gapara has since become one of Aotearoa’s most sought-after saxophonists,
respected not only in jazz but also in soul, reggae, and even kapa haka. Over
the years, he has collaborated with notable New Zealand artists like Stan
Walker, Corrella, Vince Harder, The Modern Māori Quartet, House of Shem, Three
Houses Down, and Katchafire.
His versatility has led him to contribute to iconic projects such as Five Minutes of Fame on Whakaata Māori, the Symphony concert series, and the theme music for the Rugby World Cup Sevens.
Dzindza features 12 tracks, each with its own unique
story and musical flavour. Tracks like “Mwana Wevhu” and “Mamoyo” explore themes of identity and belonging, while “Ghoema Dreams” and “From The Hills”
evoke a sense of place and nostalgia. The album also includes powerful
compositions like “Times Change,” “The Folks Are Alright,” and “Heading Home,”
which weave together jazz with the rhythms of Gapara’s homeland.
Recent interviews with NZ Musician, RNZ Concert, The Hits Breakfast, and The 95bFM Jazz Show have revealed insights into Gapara’s journey and the inspiration behind Dzindza. His recent performances, including a memorable night at Auckland’s Tuning Fork and the Nelson Arts Festival, have drawn praise for their electrifying atmosphere and the connection Gapara creates with audiences from all backgrounds.
