Embassy of Switzerland to Zimbabwe launches the $2 million SSADZA initiative for the arts sector

The embassy of Switzerland to Zimbabwe recently launched a four-year arts and culture programme dubbed the SSADZA initiative - Swiss Support to Arts Development in Zimbabwe.

Through this program, Switzerland will support Zimbabwean artists to create new work, build networks, and engage audiences, enriching the arts landscape economically and socially. The programme will stimulate social change and enhance civil society by promoting the arts and culture as a catalyst for debate, social cohesion, peaceful co-existence and localization.

SSADZA will also participate in policy influencing with donors and the government for increased financial support to the sector.

The initiative was announced by the Swiss ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi, Stephane Rey at an event marking the country’s national day celebrations in Harare.

We all know that the true magic happens when culture and human connection come into play. It is with immense pride that I announce tonight the launch of the US$2 million Swiss Arts and Culture Programme for Zimbabwe, fondly called SSADZA (yes, by now you all understand it is a tasty name). This initiative, spanning the next four years, will partner with local organisations across Zimbabwe to give artists a platform for their unique voices. - Stephane Rey, Swiss ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi

Among a wide array of goals the initiative hopes to achieve will be awarding of grants to artists and arts organizations, training artists in management and financial literacy, curation of events at Alliance Française, facilitating discussions on policy and connecting artists with new audiences and investors.

We believe in leaving the power of artistic expression, cultural preservation, and innovation in the capable hands of Zimbabweans. As SSADZA rolls out, I am confident Zimbabwean artists will continue to make waves on the local, regional, and global stages, as they have done for centuries. To ensure the sustainability of the vibrant art scene in Zimbabwe, collaboration with the private sector is crucial, as it provides the financial backing and market access needed to nurture talent and expand opportunities. - Stephane Rey, Swiss ambassador to Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi
