Yvette Ndlovu shortlisted for the 2023 Shirley Jackson Awards

Zimbabwean author Yvette Lisa Ndlovu has been shortlisted for the 2023 Shirley Jackson Awards for outstanding achievement in horror, psychological suspense, and dark fantasy fiction, under the Single Author Collection category. This is in recognition of the author's debut story collection Drinking from Graveyard Wells.

Yvette is one of only four African writers to make the list this year, out of a total of forty five acclaimed authors.


The Shirley Jackson Awards are literary awards named after Shirley Jackson in recognition of her legacy in writing. These awards recognising outstanding achievement in the literature of psychological suspense, horror and dark fantasy are presented at Readercon, an annual conference on imaginative literature. 


The awards are given for the best work published in the preceding calendar year in the following categories: Novel, Novella, Novelette, Short Story, Single-Author Collection and Edited Anthology. Award-winners are selected by a jury of professional writers, editors, critics and academics, with input from a Board of Advisors.

Yvette Lisa Ndlovu’s debut anthology melds folklore, myth, realism, and SFF elements into a cohesive whole, telling stories that cast new light on longstanding issues, from gentrification to assimilation, stolen ideas to stolen memories. The book was also shortlisted for 2023 Ursula K. Le Guin Prize, and Brittle Paper ranked it as one of the 100 Notable African Books of 2023.
