Season 19 of America's Got Talent premiered this week and featured among the opening episode's auditions was Zimbabwean comedian Learnmore Jonasi. The comedian earned the coveted Golden Buzzer, marking him as one of the standout performers.
The comedian had shared a few weeks ago that he had auditioned on the show but what he had left out was just how well it went. Jonasi performed a 2 minute long set that had the audience in stitches and culminated in a standing ovation.
The judges had nothing but praise for him and Simon Cowell actually stated that Jonasi was one of the funniest people the talent had ever had over the years.
As the judges finished sharing their views on his performance Terry Crews walked in, a comedian Jonasi had referred to as changing his life in the interview before his performance. Crews added on to the plaudits the comedian had received and then pressed the Golden Buzzer, sending Jonasi straight through to the America's Got Talent live shows.
America's Got Talent (often abbreviated as AGT) is a televised American talent show competition, and is part of the global Got Talent franchise created by Simon Cowell. A Golden Buzzer is a special feature on the show that allows judges to send an act directly to the live shows, bypassing lower levels of the competition. This season rach judge will have two chances to use it, while the host can only press the Golden Buzzer once.
Nicknamed "The Village Boy", Learnmore Jonasi has accumulated a host of awards in the comedy space across his career. In 2019 he won the NAMA Award for Outstanding Comedian of the Year and the Savanna Comic Choice Award for Pan African Comic of the Year. He was also the People's Choice Award winner in Steve Harvey's Stand Up Spotlight competition.
Jonasi was one of four grant recipients of Steel City Arts Foundation, a live/work/play environment for comedians in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. A grant that allowed him to take his comedy across the United States.
He has performed in over 25 cities across 15 countries at various Theatres, Festivals, Comedy Clubs, and on TV Shows. Most recently, he was the winner of the Audience's Choice Award at the Jersey City Comedy Festival and the winner of the 2023 Boston Comedy Festival.
