James Manyika, currently serving as Google's Senior Vice President of Research, Technology, and Society, has distinguished himself with a stellar career marked by a profound commitment to harnessing the potential of technology for the betterment of society. A true luminary in the AI field, Manyika holds a Ph.D. in AI from Oxford University, has served as a technology adviser during the Obama Administration, and has been both a visiting scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and a respected consultant at McKinsey.
With a multifaceted career spanning across academia, public service, and corporate leadership, Manyika, at the age of 58, continues to push the boundaries of AI. He also serves as a Vice Chair of the National AI Advisory Committee, a pivotal federal panel entrusted with developing strategies for AI regulation.
Reflecting on his remarkable journey, Manyika remarked to TIME in a interview, "Throughout my career and all the different things I've done, there's been a bit of a through line of, on the one hand, how do we harness the possibilities of technology to benefit people everywhere, from East Palo Alto to Zimbabwe—but at the same time, be thoughtful about the impact on society of these technologies?"

Notable projects include an AI-powered system tracking wildfires from California to Australia and Flood Hub, a platform that forecasts flood risks in vulnerable regions, now serving 80 countries and hundreds of millions of people.
Despite his enthusiasm for AI's transformative capabilities, Manyika remains acutely aware of its potential risks. In May, he signed the Center for AI Safety's statement on AI risk, which raised concerns about the possibility of humanity's "extinction from AI." Manyika's upbringing in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), under a system akin to apartheid, profoundly influenced his perspective on AI and the critical importance of averting scenarios that could have disastrous consequences, such as the misuse of facial recognition technology by oppressive governments.
Manyika's foremost priority is the development of AI products that prioritize safety and transparency regarding their limitations, even if it means Google lags behind its AI competitors. As he puts it, "Others will go earlier or later, some will go faster. To me, the only race here is to get it right."
