Ruvarashe Moyo Clinches $10,000 Ricoh Award for Transforming Clay Bricks into Supercapacitors

Ruvarashe Moyo, a student at Harare's USAP Community School,  has been honoured with the prestigious 2023 Ricoh Sustainable Development Award for her groundbreaking project, which ingeniously transforms ordinary clay bricks into supercapacitors.

Ruvarashe Moyo, a promising young scientist won the Award following her presentation at the 2023 Regeneron ISEF -- the world's largest pre-university science competition, drawing in thousands of exceptionally bright young minds from across the globe, all vying for lucrative cash prizes, scholarships, and numerous other opportunities.

Zimbabwe Science Fair handpicked Ruvarashe to represent Zimbabwe at the 2023 Regeneron ISEF, where her pioneering work on clay brick supercapacitors garnered significant attention. Joanette Ngwenya from Bulawayo also won a special award in Robotics and Intelligent Machines at the same competition for her groundbreaking sign language interpreter project.

In recognition of her remarkable project, Ruvarashe was bestowed with the Ricoh Sustainable Development Award, a substantial cash prize of $10,000, courtesy of Ricoh Inc.


Ruvarashe Moyo's passion for science has led her to become one of the first Africans to participate in the Science Internship Program at the University of California Santa Cruz. Following her internship, driven by her ardent desire to popularize astronomy in Zimbabwe and beyond, she co-founded the non-profit organization "Junior Space Explorers." This organization is on a mission to enhance the lives of children of all ages by inspiring curiosity and exploration through space and astronomy.

Ruvarashe has actively engaged in various research projects, focusing on energy and water purification, with the aim of addressing the pressing issues facing her community.

Her aspirations include advancing her studies in fields such as nanotechnology, computer science, quantum computing, and astronomy. Furthermore, she aims to expand the reach of "Junior Space Explorers," nurturing a new generation of students dedicated to research and groundbreaking discoveries.
