It has been a great month for Zimbabwe hip-hop as three projects released in the past few weeks debuted top albums in Zimbabwe according to data from Apple Music Zimbabwe Top Albums chart.
Life of Muvhimi by Voltz JT debuted as the number 1 most streamed album in Zimbabwe, whilst Suhn's self-titled project, SUHN and Saintfloew's Sauna Season EP both debuted at number 2 position on the chart.
The track "Can't see you" from Suhn's debut album has been added to six Apple Music Editorial Playlists: Alte Cruise, Africa Rising, New in Hip-Hop, African Hip-Hop, New Music Daily, and Oshe Naija.
This makes Suhn the second Zimbabwe Hip-Hop act in recent months to archive this feat after Holy Ten whose tracks Sahwira and Musazvituma from the 2021 album Risky Life secured placement on Africa Now and Essential African Hip-Hop playlists.
Playlist support from streaming platforms has become a top priority for independent artists. Being included on the right playlists can vastly improve streaming numbers and ensure that releases reach a truly global audience. Statistics have shown that being included on Spotify-sponsored playlists can generate an increase in plays of 50-100%, with a 20% lasting increase following the initial rise.
Zimbabwean artists can research relevant playlist curators themselves and try to contact them directly. Keep an email short and succinct, include easy listen-to links and make sure you are asking them to consider a track for a specific playlist.
