Asaph is readying to release his Def Jam Africa debut EP titled The Big Mhofu.
October is a month of remembering the Zimbabwean hip-hop legacy in Bulawayo. The late icon CalVin is a name that is forever entrenched in the memory of this genre. During his time and after, Asaph Afrika rose to prominence as an equal measure when it comes to talent and impact in the industry. He solidly became a household name that to an extent conquered the geographical limitations experienced by many who don't hail from the capital city but, that issue has been monotonic. Asaph's peak came with The People's Rapper EP in 2019. He then went on a row, locking the nation with big hits Like So and Asipheli Moya to mention a few, before getting nominated for people's choice at the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs).
Def Jam emerged on the scene to win his signature and up to this day, the streets have been wandering. A blockbuster deal that has left us hanging for a long time. He recently came out to defend the "silence" when Rayobeats alleged something along the lines of Cal dying with Bulawayo hip hop. They have been mourning and for a name like Cal it's not just a statistic it's a tragedy for hip-hop.
Asaph has however released the cover and tracklist for his latest upcoming EP titled Big Mhofu. Features include his loyal affiliate Ganyaz Jr and this is exemplary to many in the game to reserve loyalty over everything. On the tracklist, only Thebelele has been air-played.
"Reclaiming my identity is about more than just being the best rapper. It’s about remembering the person I was raised to be. Reclaiming my identity is about letting go of all the trauma, addictions and insecurities that can weigh you down in this life. It’s about reclaiming the spark that made me want to write about the City I’m from and make songs that could inspire the Nation to stand together as one people if we want to bring change. It’s about rebuilding my confidence and not being limited by the shame that comes with making bad decisions in a small city. It’s about continuing God's mission. This is my rebirth, this is my rededication, this is BIG MHOFU." Asaph says.
