Over half a decade, many singles and collaborations into the game, UK-based Zimbabwe singer and producer Charlie Kay is still keen on reinvention. On his latest track, Solo, with Gemma Griffiths and Cassper Nyovest they channel African pop sound fused with Caribbean and Afro Beat vibes. Solo carries a catchy jazzy solo guitar riff that gives the song Zimbabwean structure and character.
Co-produced by O-25, “Solo” is Charlie Kay at his most vicious. "Everything nice and bless, I know they are tryina vex, Let them keep on trying. We keep grinding where I'm from." he sings on an instrumental that could soundtrack an action-packed film.
Charlie Kay's voice sounds solid and determined. His accompanists Gemma Griffiths and Cassper Nyovest follow his lead, setting the mood with a slow-burning drone, texture with a chorus that flows with the emotional cadence of an Afrobeats song.
