Hwange National Park Listed Among World's 50 Greatest Places of 2022 By TIME Magazine

Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park is listed among Time Magazine's World's 50 Greatest Places of 2022 list. This marks the wildlife conservation area as one of the 50 extraordinary destinations to explore in the world this year.

This - in part, is due to a landmark conservation project launched in late May 2022 which saw Community Rhino Conservation Initiative and Imvelo Safari Lodges translocate two white rhinos to community lands bordering Hwange National Park.

This initiative was meant to empower the local community to protect white rhinos - a species that was eradicated from the park by poaching in the early 2000s.

The project is the first and only instance in Zimbabwe of rhinos being translocated to community land, which was donated by the local population, who will also care for the animals.

Visitors will be able to see the endangered white rhino up close and meet the local teams protecting the animals.

Hwange was one of the five African destinations that made the list this year: Kigali (Rwanda), Franschhoek (South Africa), Lower Zambezi National Park (Zambia), and Nairobi (Kenya). The picks on the list included less inhabited and difficult-to-travel destinations like the Arctic and the International Space Station. TIME magazine compiled the list with the assistance of its international network of correspondents and contributors.

As persistent as the challenges of life in 2022 is the hope that understanding and human connection can be found through travel. So, with much of the global population now vaccinated against COVID-19, world travellers are again hitting the road—and the skies. The hospitality industry is reopening and excited to safely welcome them and revitalize local communities.

To compile this list of the World’s Greatest Places, the top spots to visit this year, TIME solicited nominations of places from our international network of correspondents and contributors, with an eye toward those offering new and exciting experiences.

Hwange National Park is the largest and most popular nature reserve in Zimbabwe. It offers excellent wildlife viewing, and has most of the big safari animals, with it being especially famous for the Big Five. Hwange is also widely known for the impressive concentration of elephants that frequent the park’s watering holes during the dry season. The park is also famous for its bird watching, with the best time to visit for this being from November to April as migratory birds return from Europe and Northern Africa.

As one of the best-kept game parks on the continent, Hwange offers an experience like no other, from walking safaris to exciting game drives. Visitors can look forward to a private and secluded safari in a pristine environment. Whether you take a day trip to Hwange or spend the whole week here, you can be sure of a memorable African Wildlife Experience.
