Due to the hardships that come with life, adulthood and the Zimbabwe economy, mental well-being has become vital for people to cope with the stresses of life, realize their abilities, learn well and work well, and contribute to their community.
Mental health is an integral component of health and well-being that underpins our individual and collective abilities to make decisions, build relationships and shape the world we live in. Mental health is a basic human right. And it is crucial to personal, community and socio-economic development.
According to the World Health Organization's mental health statistics, the rate of suicide in Zimbabwe is higher among men at 26.9 per 100,000 than women at 9.7 per 100,000 and is very high among older people (84.4 per 100,000).
Certain demographic groups in Zimbabwe display a higher prevalence of some conditions. Young adults (age 20-29) have a higher prevalence of bipolar disorder (0.9%), MDD (1.8%), alcohol use (3.0%), and drug use (1.9%), compared to older adults. The prevalence of MDD is much higher among adults over the age of 70.
If you or someone you know is struggling with difficult thoughts and feelings and wants to hurt themselves, you can get them to help!
We have tried our best to compile the mental health resource centers available in Zimbabwe.
The Department of Mental Health within the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoH), provides general oversight of mental health care in Zimbabwe.
You can add more places in the comment section. The places we found are mostly based in Harare but I m sure they will be able to refer you to a center close to your town.
