Google hired US based Zimbabwean consultant Dr. James M. Manyika as the company's first SVP of Technology and Society.
Dr. Manyika is a researcher, and writer known for his research into topics such as artificial intelligence, robotics automation, and the future of work. His new role at Google focuses on how tech affects society.
Dr. Manyika was a Rhodes Scholar and received a B.S. from the University of Zimbabwe and an M.A., M.S., and D.Phil. from Oxford University. He was the White House Vice Chairman for Global Development Council during the Obama Administration.
Dr. Manyika is currently chairman and director of the McKinsey Global Institute, an organization that works to understand the global economy through the economic impact of tech, productivity, labor markets and other topics.
A Google spokesperson said Dr. Manyika's role works on "shaping and sharing" the company's view on the way tech affects society, the economy and the planet. His areas of focus include the future of work, sustainability and the impact of AI.
