Strive Masiyiwa has this year been honoured with a position on the prestigious Bloomberg 50. The Bloomberg 50 is a list of the 50 Most Influential people in the world and has been published by Bloomberg Media since 2011, annually listing 50 individuals with "the ability to move markets or shape ideas and policies." He features in a list that has the president of Taiwan, the likes of Marcus Rashford and Anthony Fauci among others.
According to Bloomberg traditional power rankings are based on fleeting fame versus substantial contribution metrics that impact society at large. The Bloomberg 50 takes a different approach, highlighting those who are changing the game in quantifiable ways – from finance to fashion, entertainment to manufacturing, biotech, philanthropy and almost everything in between.
“Masiyiwa, a billionaire who’s originally from outside of Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, paid monthly stipends from ZW$5,000 to ZW$10,000 (US$62 to US$124) to health-care workers to stay on the job. When COVID-19 hit, he offered an additional ZW$500 a day for anyone hospitalized by the virus and $ZW50,000 for permanent disability or death. His program ran through July, and since its expiration some workers have gone back on strike,” wrote Godfrey Marawanyika for Bloomberg.
