2020 has been a strange year, but Zimbabwean-born Australian artist Tkay Maidza has managed to make it work for her, achieving phenomenal creative success. Her latest album, Last Year Was Weird Vol. 2, represented a risky departure from her earlier sound, but has been widely praised by critics – and with good reason. There’s a song for everyone to dance to on the eight-track record, from the sugary indie-pop tune “You Sad” to the sultry “PB Jam” – about “being confused about who you are – a mixture of so many things that works well like peanut butter [and] jam” – and on to hip-hop club anthem “Shook”. “The album is about the future, but I was just trying to embrace who I am and the album is a soundtrack to that journey, continuing on from my first album where I was questioning my existence,” she tells Vogue. Frankly, the final album in her Last Year Was Weird trilogy, which she has been working on during the pandemic, couldn’t come soon enough. “It’s more confident. I’m no longer being reflective, but manifesting this confident energy, so it’s not sad, but more dark and experimental.” Follow the link, and step into Tkay Maidza’s futuristic world as she took on Vogue’s personality test.
