Zimbabwean born Stansly Maponga signs a 1 year, $585,000 contract with the New York Giants

In 2013, the Atlanta Falcons drafted defensive end Zimbabwean-born Stansly Maponga in the fifth round. After playing just barely above 200 snaps in his first, and notching one sack in the 2014 blowout of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Falcons slid him to the practice squad. However, the New York Giants have signed him on their active roster.

The 6-foot-2, 265-pound Maponga, who was signed Saturday, was a fifth-round draft pick (153rd overall) out of TCU by Atlanta in 2013.

Maponga played in 24 games with the Falcons — 12 each in 2013 and 2014 — before being waived by the Falcons before the start of the 2015 season.

In his career, Maponga has recorded eight tackles and a sack, which was for an 11-yard loss against Tampa Bay last season. He recovered two fumbles in 2014.

Maponga was born in Zimbabwe and grew up playing rugby until coming to the United States as a 9-year-old.

Stansly Maponga signed a 1 year, $585,000 contract with the New York Giants, including an average annual salary of $585,000. In 2015, Maponga will earn a base salary of $137,647. Maponga has a cap hit of $137,647.
