The annual National Arts Merit Awards (NAMA) 2011 ceremony continued irregardless of the fact that they failed to secure any funding for the event. ZTV refused to air the show on national television. The event is not very popular among Zimbabwean youths for it has had nothing in common in the past except for the fact that this year, Winky D got 3 nominations and scoped two awards out of the three. Its traditional/ classical approach and failure to recognize the urban youth's art such as Hip Hop, Dancehall, Break dancing and Fashion among other things led to past resentment by the youth. "They just keep on awarding Albert Nyathi and Oliver Mtukudzi year in year out.." Said an anonymous urban groover. However this year, the poor people's devotee Winky D managed to successfully infiltrate the system and compete with the museve and gospel music maestros.
In reaction to getting two NAMA awards last weekend, Winky didn't waste any time, as he quickly rushed to the studio and recorded a new song "League Tatora" to go with the nationwide Ninja celebration. In an official statement, Winky D said, "Maninja Allow me to express my sincere and heartfelt gratitude to all Maninja for the undying love and support over the years, especially as we crossed rough patches at the hands of negative energy to our cause. Allow me to officially announce that last night, was indeed a great night for all those who believe in the ca...use of the upliftment of the lives of poor people, the cause for which I devoted my career towards.Maninja you were officially recognised and given accolades in two NAMA categories namely best Album(Igofigo) and the people's choice award. You will forever remain my unending cosmic and organic source of inspiration. We conquered together against very rough episodes, which never made us look back because the cause at stake i.e the lives of the poor people calls for the utmost vigilance from us all.Lets continue supporting the cause as Ninjas and take the accolades as realization of our efforts in the struggle. The foundation has been set, lets remain vigilant and together we will continue to achieve the unthinkable. ENJOY DI NU TRACK(LEAGUE TATORA)"
Alick Macheso who always dominated the event was reduced to a mere sit filler after losing in all three categories to Winky, Kapfupi and Sulumani Chimbetu and in his acceptance speech, Sulu said "From the bottom of my heart I want to thank you all Dendera fans for the NAMA award I received for the Outstanding Musician award. I dedicate this award to you my fans, uncle Allan Chimbetu, baba Oliver Mtukudzi, mudhara Svosve who all worked with me on the Non Stop album and everyone who has made a contribution to my career because of all of you,i will go on NON STOP
Maninja forever!
